If you visit your local historical society, take a look at a newspaper from early October of 1910 or so. What you'll see on the front page, even if you live hundreds of miles from a major league stadium, is the recap of a World Series game. Once upon that time, the game was interwoven in the very fabric of our being. In one sense, Steve Myers takes us back to that time; it's worth noting how very little blow-by-blow, play-by-play baseball there is in the book. There are the mentions of Ruth and Cobb, of Warren Cromartie and Termel Sledge, but there is much more of the baseball which dwells in our being in these stories. It's worth noting that there are few, if any, run-of-the-mill people in the book; Steve's characters live on the fringes of reality, and indeed slipping over into the surreal, like baseball fandom itself--but we can recognize the emotions, the hopes and dreams, of the folks on these pages. This is simply world-class storytelling, and it is essential stuff for anyone who loves baseball and fine writing.Product details

Dreaming 400 Steve Myers 9781938545641 Books Reviews
This is a terrific book for baseball aficionados of all ages and especially at this time of year as we anxiously await the beginning of another Spring training and the ensuing season. Steve Myers has put his extraordinary imagination to work in creating wonderfully whimsical characters and plots in his short baseball stories, each one of which is full of surprises. Perhaps my favorite thing about the stories is that when you least expect it, all of a sudden there is mention of a baseball icon from the distant past or an arcane baseball statistic that you never knew about -- but are now happy to learn. Highly recommended!
I really like this book. Very inspiring and touching stories, filled with dreams and redemption in off beat ways. A great variety of unique characters as well. There’s friendship, community and plenty of unexpected turns, giving the 11 stories a universal appeal for fans of baseball or not, old or young. As an abandoned Expos fan, I have read the story, ``Expos Next Generation`` more than once, and each time, I am overcome by very powerful emotions – sadness, joy, and well, wanting the Expos to return.
One of the most enjoyable baseball books I've read in a long time, though to call it merely a "baseball" book does it a disservice. The author, Steve Myers, taps into a kind of Jungian shared subconscious, and lays it bare before our eyes. We can only sit in wonder and amazement at the results. There are people who want very much to be writers. Then there are naturals like Mr. Myers who demonstrate that on some level, the stories are already there, ready to tell themselves, if only a person of sound heart and clear conscious is available to transfer them from some distant dimension into our own.
From a baseball standpoint, if you remember Sixto Lezcano, Rob Deer, Mike Scott or Gary Matthews (to name a few), or if you have ever pored over an edition of the Baseball Encyclopedia for hours on end, fascinated by the endless details of the 1904 season, or the 1986 N.L. playoffs, this book might be for you. If you've ever day-dreamed away an afternoon, and those dreams somehow seemed more life-like than the world around you, this book is definitely for you.
My favorite stories in this collection are "To Be Frank," (one of the best stories about friendship I've ever read), "Expos Next Generation," and "Thunderheart and the New Addictions," but there isn't a bad story in the lot.
I highly recommend that you make this book part of your permanent baseball reading collection, to be rediscovered again and again during the cold, desolate off-season as well as for those long, languid summer afternoons, an hour or so before first pitch, when the twilight magic is strongest.
Good read. Nice to pick up 4 a short read.
Baseball stories written on diamonds. Each story sparkles with wit and poetry.
Each sentence resonates. Steve Myers is the new David Foster Wallace. Even though I'm not a huge enough baseball fan to appreciate the stories and insights on the players, I appreciated the vivid characters.
This collection of imaginative short stories is thoroughly enjoyable. The ones that I enjoyed the most were "Thunderheart and the The New Addictions", "Dreaming .400", "Make Me One With Everything", and "Close Encounter". The stories are moving and often knee-slappingly funny. Offbeat is another word I would use to describe the stories. The characters are fun. The plots of the stories are unpredictable. Mostly, though, the stories are highly enjoyable. I'm glad I bought the book, and, after reading it, I loved it so much that I bought another as a present for my sister and for a friend of mine. I recommend it highly.
